West Calder High School marks summer handover

West Lothian Council have taken possession of the £32m West Calder High School following a handover by Hub South East and Morrison Construction.

The 1,100-pupil school has been designed by Norr Architects and includes a range of community facilities, including a 20m pool, which will also become available when the school opens its doors to pupils and staff this August.

Councillor David Dodds commented: “We are delighted to receive the keys to the fantastic new West Calder High School, which we believe is the finest facility of its kind in the UK just now.”

The deep plan building is encased in jet black fritted aluminium with an open plan interior drawing light throughout, aided by internal glazed screens. At its heart is a central reception space likened to an agora which doubles as an assembly room, events space and dining hall.

A £5.5m road bridge over a nearby railway line has also been built to provide access to the site from the A71.
