Fifth iteration of Glasgow office block ups floorspace amidst supply drought
Sheppard Robson Architects have filed a fifth planning application to develop a brownfield site in the heart of Glasgow’s International Financial Services District which currently has approval for a 260,000sq/ft block spanning 12 floors.

The latest approach for 177 Bothwell Street, which has stood vacant for over a decade, calls for creation of 305,000sq/ft of space amidst an ongoing dearth of supply - with no speculative office developments underway in the CBD and the earliest anticipated new build completion not hitting the market until summer 2020.

Carrying forward the most recently consented scheme the architects propose to address this shortfall with a simple glass block, lent interest through subdivision into a series of separate ‘boxes’ of varying width and height.

These will be differentiated through use of recessed stone piers with additional accommodation taking the form of setback ‘attic floors’ recessed behind the main datum. Rooftop plant space will be hidden behind a screened enclosure encircled by a perimeter running track intended to help sedentary office workers escape their desks.

Clydesdale bank signed a 120k sq/f prelet for this a couple of days ago so it seems this Glasgow office development will actually(!) happen.

Sandra - "Oh Viv im so tired from all these spreadsheets. Day in day out - its getting to me. Its all just meaningless. We just sit here sedentary all day in this simple glass box working, but for what? Its so abstract you know? Like I dont see the point or see the purpose sometimes. I dont know what to do Viv... I feel like I cant take it any more... ... Viv?"

Viv - "Get your running shoes Sandra. See you on the roof in 10. Better bring a jacket actually"

Humans are strange creatures. They sit around staring at computers all day, eating wheat products filled with dairy produce, and believe a five-minute trudge in the drizzle once a week will absolve them of their corpulence.

Still, it's nice to have the option.

fifth planning application!!

Wow, it's amazing, I've been saying for years that what buildings in Glasgow have been missing is somewhere on the roof to spend a lunchtime running away from seaguls
