University of Edinburgh begins conversion of B-listed Murchison House

The University of Edinburgh has begun refurbishment of the B-listed Murchison House, former home of the British Geological Survey, within its King’s Buildings campus.The £7.7m scheme is timetabled to complete by September 2018 following an extensive fit-out and refurbishment to create an open-plan teaching hub complete with study spaces, lecture theatres, exhibition space, offices, business incubators and student services.
Brian McQuade, managing director of the Kier Construction Scotland and north east, said: “We are delighted to have won this important contract which demonstrates our solid record of successfully completing major projects of this scale and builds upon our relationship with the University of Edinburgh where we are currently working on the refurbishment of Edinburgh College of Art.”
Delivered by Kier Construction to designs by Reiach & Hall the scheme will enable the university to employ the latest IT and audiovisual tools for the benefit of students and staff.
