The museum is hoping to have the new centre in place for 2018 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Formula One champion Jim Clark’s death at Hockenheim, Germany.
A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “This [design proposal] seeks to remodel and rationalise the accommodation in the B-listed building that currently houses the collection and proposes bringing into use a former garage to display racing cars as part of the overall visitor experience.
"A glazed link is also proposed to provide a light-touch intervention that allows the character of the original building to be maintained while providing a new focal point entrance for the museum. This link would also provide space that could be adapted for different uses and be capable of further expansion to the rear elevation in the future if the collection continues to grow."
Financial support of 900k has already been raised by the local community and council toward the £1.65m scheme, designed by the council's architect services team.
