Morgan McDonnell oversee conversion of Dundee’s B-listed Maritime Building
August 31 2015
Fresh from their work on Edinburgh’s Advocate’s Close and The Registers Morgan McDonnell Architects have filed an application for the B-listed Maritime Building on East Dock Street, Dundee, to house ground floor office space with ten flats above. This work will see later additions to the rear swept away to allow a small scale insertion within the footprint of the existing building, facilitating its conversion to flats and offices.
In their design statement the architects noted: “The transition between old and new is articulated by a glazed slot that provides light into the apartments and highlights an entrance point into the building. As a statement of the buildings reinvention, the zinc clad extension presents a clear and dynamic form that compliments and contrasts with the old building.
“Care is taken to maintain and respect the initial design intent of the original listed building. The existing corrugated lift overrun and non-original dormer windows are removed to reinstate the symmetrically arranged principle face. Conservation skylights that are positioned symmetrically on the elevation to bring daylight into bedrooms and the non-original glass entrance doors onto East Dock Street are replaced with a new timber door set.”
Internally work will require demolition of a central chimney and the raising of fourth floor collar beams to provide necessary head room.
