Kirkintilloch primary heralded as the start of a new era in school construction
May 29 2015
A Kirkintilloch primary school is being heralded as a cost-effective and flexible solution for other council’s to follow by the Scottish Futures Trust, the body responsible for overseeing infrastructure investment.Lairdsland Primary, designed by Walters & Cohen, has been hailed for its scalable design, capable of being tailored for the local demands of pupil numbers and includes a number of innovative design features.
These include extra-wide staircases which can double as theatre seating, classrooms with internal glass walls and covered balconies connected to each classroom. Other key elements include flexible break-out spaces and unisex toilets for each classroom and a double-height central atrium.
Grant Robertson, associate director at SFT, said: “With Scotland’s councils under constant pressure to make their budgets stretch further, many local authorities are recognising the huge benefits to be had by adopting the reference design.
“One significant benefit is that they have a tried and tested architectural concept at their fingertips ready to use immediately without having to embark upon lengthy procurement processes that suck in resources and wastes time and money.”
East Dunbartonshire Council has committed to building Lenzie Moss Primary to the same design and the City of Edinburgh Council is considering appropriating elements of the school for St John’s RC Primary.
