Bennetts Associates to finally complete unfinished Potterrow complex
Bennetts Associates are to press ahead with the final phase of their Potterrow development for the University of Edinburgh, having first began design work on the project back in 2003 in collaboration with Reiach & Hall.

Phases one and two of this work completed in 2009 with the unveiling of a new base for the university’s informatics and humanities faculties.

This will be joined in early 2018 by the Data Technology Institute, a research space for industry start-ups and robotics, offering flexible teaching and administration spaces which will be built facing the original scheme across an internal courtyard.

Clad in natural stone and marble-aggregate polished concrete it will be integrated into the wider area with a new pedestrian route connecting George and Bristo Squares.

Rab Bennetts, founding director of Bennetts Associates, commented: “We’re delighted to be working again with the University of Edinburgh and to be completing the final part of our Potterrow development. The project was the first major urban project carried out by our Edinburgh studio but the east side of the project was left unfinished due to uncertainty about funding at that time. It also broke new ground in the design of internal workspace and, because we carried out extensive monitoring of the first phases, we have been able to incorporate the lessons learned into the revised design.”

The revised planning application for the site was submitted last month.
The new addition will serve as a gateway to the university campus and completes an internal square

Touché to those who doubted the second phase would materialise. Bring it on!
