Dunnet Head & Bay sculptures given go ahead
Highland Council has given the go-ahead to a series of environmental improvement works at Dunnet Beach, including the installation of two sculptures, as part of a £100k upgrade of visitor facilities for the most northerly point of the British mainland.

These include David Annand’s Radar Gulf Waves at Dunnet Head, a 3m steel sculpture representing a radar screen with an abstract element referencing ocean waves and the wings of a seagull.

Helen Michie meanwhile has drawn up plans for a ‘Whale Bone Skull’ at Dunnet Bay that is intended to represent the shape of a Minke whale skull via a metal framework inside a carved dense polystyrene material which is itself coated in glass reinforced concrete.

Glass mosaic panels will then be afficed to this structure to represent images of an Atlantic White-Sided dolphin, a Short Beaked Common Dolphin and Fin Whale.

Detailed design work on the sculptures will now take place in conjunction with further consultation with the local community.

Very nice - but given the design I think they should go looking for some sponsorship monies from Toyota!

Wait a minute, no wire horses?

In all seriousness, it is great to see investment within each of these areas. Dunnet is a stunning location. It would be great if the art was accompanied by wayfinding, seating and perhaps some modest (architect designed) shelter.

I live the closest to the Dunnet Head View Point, literally a stone throw away, at the old Coastguard Cottages. The View Point is clearly visible from my property. I rarely read newspapers. No one has bothered to inform me about these plans, which I have just learnt about today, April 17th. The money would be better spent renovating the old WW2 military radar operations room (opposite my cottage), which could also provide shelter, seating and toilet facilities for visitors. The vista itself from the View Point is all is needed to capture the imagination of visitors and could be spoilt by a large ‘object of art’. Dunnet Head is a wonderful lonesome natural area; I just hope it remains to be in the future.
