John O’Groats vies to ditch Carbuncle tag with redevelopment plans
Highland Council have approved plans by Natural Retreats and Heritage GB to redevelop and extend the derelict John O’Groats hotel to form self catering holiday apartments alongside 16 detached lodges.

Using “environmentally-sustainable construction” and “cutting-edge design” the plan will also see the Journey’s End Café extended to offer high quality local produce.

Later plans would see the harbour area public realm upgraded and construction of a multi use visitor centre.

Natural Retreats’ director Ewan Kearney said, “Our aim is to create a new vision for John O’Groats and to ensure that visitors feel moved, informed and educated by their experience.”

It follows the northern outpost receiving the dubious distinction of Scotland’s most dismal place during Urban Realm’s Carbuncle awards held earlier this year.

Things are happening with one of the other nominees for the award, past runner-down, New Cumnock in Ayrshire. The council have passed plans for the demolition of the Tam o' Shanter Cafe and the building of a state of the art TAM O' SHANTER that will sit at the northern entrance to the town. What a real difference this will make to the whole area I'm sure. To see the plans, go to: http://eplanning.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/online/files/848E9407137C33251368DF2D940BA8F4/pdf/document-62601.pdf

Instead of demolishing an hotel, could renovating one make all the difference to a dying town?
With so much happening near the town of New Cumnock ie Dumfries House Estate; Knockroon; the proposed Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere Reserve, and with it having a railway station, being on the A76; with connections to Wallace, Bruce, etc.; home to the last open air heated swimming pool; Burns' Sweet Afton, Banks o' Nith and Parnassus Hill.
Surely a renovated hotel, which could also double as a catering school, would be worth looking into?

It's like Borneo Sporenburg - only with less vision. Nice idea but a poor imitation
