East Kilbride masterplan approved
A 30ha mixed use East Kilbride masterplan, prepared jointly by Block and Mill Architects, has been approved by South Lanarkshire Council.

It will see a hotel, supermarket, Dobbies garden Centre, petrol filling station and small retail units rise in the New Town.

Developed by JHAG Ltd the proposal is one of a number of competing supermarket plans in the town, each of which has been competing in a race to secure planning.

This shouldn't even be given the importance of being referred to as a masterplan - its a glorified car parking layout. Come on! Allotments? Commercial units - Check! Car Parking - Check! ....... Eh what's next? Green Spaces? Check.
Usual kak - how does this stuff get approved?

Hope they're not buying all those trees at Dobbies prices.

Easy!

The car prevails! Policy for provision of cars makes 'masterplanning' difficult particularly when dealing with such large retail facilities.

Surely alotments are a good thing?

this isn't even news-worthy - it's junk in every way and completely disgraceful that Urban Realm should be uncritically giving this a puff

Have lived away from EK & Scotland for 8yrs now. I usually am able to expound the benefits of using Scottish professionals for design & planning over most other regions of the country, but not in this case, was rather perturbed. But then I cracked it, this is just a site layout that's been quickly knocked up by the office junior when the professionals were out to lunch. Phew, glad that's resolved!

Dear JT - yes you are right - I only come on here to be miserable - I smile privately at the good things and comment about the bad things. Are you a Mason?

Dear John Glenday - this isn't really news at all - not even bad news. A man crossed Argyle Street = news? Some firm did some drawings for someone else = news? Some one got planning permission = news? You guys must be desperate - maybe if you actually did some investigation or journalism (remember that) instead of recycling crap PR statements and publishing non-stories, UR would be a better source of info - cheerio, HMac

What is a Mason? I am a student of architecture in Manchester and a regular reader of this forum. We all find things that are good and bad in architecture I just wondered if you have any positive contribution to make that's all. No offence

A student of architecture in Manchester? That explains a great deal. It's not the finest example of urban planning ever is it? Nicely coloured in though, mostly kept the crayoning within the edges. You'll be learning how to do that next year.

Enjoy that Tunnock's Hugh, and keep up the splenetic comments. Things can only get better?

dear jt - no offence taken at all. as I said, I probably comment on things that anger me and leave the rest alone so what you see could be construed as negativity. on the other hand, commenting on some of the crap that is reported on here is potentially positive - or are we all to be clap-happy morons smiling meaninglessly at each other? of course I am an architect! - who isn't on here?
