Iberdrola picks Glasgow for offshore wind HQ
Iberdrola put wind in Glasgow’s sails with plans for a global offshore windfarm base, building a team which is expected to exceed 200 engineers, planners and marine biologists by 2015.

Initially 20 staff from ScottishPower Renewables, whom Iberdrola owns, will be transferred to an Offshore Wind Division. This team would oversee plans to build 10,000 megawatts of offshore capacity in UK waters and constitute a specialist centre for similar developments globally.

It will join an anticipated 250 strong engineering division in the city which will focus on bringing new technologies to market.

This will entail high voltage grid improvements to new wind farms and developing carbon capture and storage technology, potentially being trialled at Longannet.

Glasgow is developing a reputation as a renewable leader after scooping a £20m Centre of Engineering Excellence for Renewable Energy from rival provider Scottish and Southern Energy last year.
