Chester zoo plans bubble ecology
A slice of Africa is to be transplanted to the north of England courtesy of a 34m tall biodome at Chester Zoo.

Designed by Proctor and Matthews architects the £90m, EFTE clad structure could pop the Eden Projects bubble in Cornwall for sheer scale.

Such mass is required to accommodate the rainforest habitat of the Congo replete with jungle canopy and tropical climate.

Roaming this artificial environment will be a band of gorillas, chimpanzees, okapi, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and invertebrates.

A water ride, retail and dining facilities would allow

The exotic habitat will form the hub of a £225m redevelopment of the zoo, which it is said will create Europe’s largest conservation, animal and leisure attraction over the next 15 years.

The biodome could open to visitors in 2014.
