Aberdeen Beach aims high with a vertical play park

Aberdeen is turning its attention to its shorefront with plans for a 23m play structure that will come to dominate its beachfront.

The Sky Tower will stand the equivalent of eight storeys, making its presence felt from the city centre as part of efforts to shift Aberdeen's centre of gravity toward the North Sea.

Part of a new beach park and events field the landmark structure is inspired by an intertwined rope and is one of four connected play areas. Enclosed by steel mesh the tower will invite children to scale its viewing platform, with enclosed steel pipes facilitating the return journey.

Other attractions are planned to draw people of all ages to the area, including a skatepark and a gateway complex providing shelter in the exposed climate.

Designed by Keppie, the tower foundations have already been laid.
