Care home supplants planned Kelvindale apartments

A planned Kelvindale apartment block has transitioned from mainstream to care accommodation under new plans by the Unum Partnership and Northcare.

The site of the former Rannoch House at 97 Cleveden Road was to have housed 30 flats, but will now host a 60-bed care home instead to accommodate an ever-increasing elderly population.

Adhering to National Care Standards the £10m development will target the over 75's, clustering rooms in independent living wings of up to 10 ensuite bedrooms. Each wing has access to dedicated living and dining accommodation as well as providing staff support.

In a planning statement, Unum wrote: "By comparison of the two schemes, this proposal achieves twice the density in terms of residental provision than the domestic scheme as a much reduced massing and appearance from the street."

A linear arrangement will help to heal the fractured streetscape, while retaining existing cherry trees, necessitating relocation of a substation and access route.

Finished in blonde sandstone, with a contrasting aluminium rainscreen to the third floor, the development employs protruding bays and articulated massing in a nod to traditional terraces and villas.
