Aberdeen streetscape improvements tie city and beach together

Aberdeen is putting its best foot forward with a series of public realm improvements designed to enhance pedestrian connectivity.

Significant changes to the beachfront and Castlegate areas are planned to help draw people from the city centre toward a series of planned beachfront play and events spaces.

The pedestrian spine of impermeable buff asphalt will incorporate a designated cycle path, landscaping and benches with bicycle parking. Meanwhile, outdoor seating is to be introduced to the area around the Mercat Cross in the city centre, with improved lighting and paving to enhance its setting.

The planned measures will clear streets of clutter with strategically placed planters and furniture to shepherd people around the monument. As part of this work, a statue commemorating the Gordon Highlanders is to be relocated to the south side of the Castlegate.

Having visited Aberdeen recently for an overnight stay, Union Street was utterly deserted in the afternoon, evening and following morning, while Union Square, with transport links by train and bus as well as car parking, was busy. I have no idea who the Council is trying to encourage to stroll from Union Street towards the beach - there is no-one there and shops (including M&S) are closing or already empty. Oh dear!
