Abandoned Glasgow tower to find new purpose as co-living flats

Stalled plans to transform a B-listed landmark looming over George Square into a 'science city' have been scrapped after the development was sold to a housing developer.

The B-listed Met Tower on North Hanover Street has been acquired from Bruntwood by Vita Group, who will transform the former college into co-living apartments with some of the best views in the city.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Vita’s plans will bring what is an emerging accommodation concept to Glasgow, one that’s been successful elsewhere and which can meet the needs of many younger residents.

“When it first opened in the early 1960s, the Met Tower was a symbol of a new and modern Glasgow. I look forward to it once again becoming a potent symbol of our changing city centre.”

Differentiated from a standard residential building, Vita's approach will emphasise shared amenities and community facilities to entice young professionals to the city centre, drawing on Vita's experience of delivering similar projects in Manchester.

"Shared amenities and community facilities". That's a grand euphemism for saying "we'll make it as cheap as chips". What a tragic end to what looked visionary and progressive.

The real shame here is that Brentwood were not able to convert the building for starter innovative businesses for young entrepreneurs , this is the future which Glasgow will miss out on Manchester ,Leeds, Birmingham and Liverpool all have these developments

Student flats in all but name.
This building sitting right beside Strathclyde University could have been so much more.
