Site clearance expands Elgin's South Street

Elgin's South Street has taken on a new aspect with the completion of initial demolition works for an urban renewal project.

Moray Council has teamed up with Robertson and the University of the Highlands and Islands for the venture, which has seen two former shops, the Newmarket Bar and the Jailhouse nightclub cleared.

This paves the way for 38 affordable apartments and a business enterprise hub offering accommodation for start-ups and students. Three shops will also open and a new public route will run to the High Street.

Elliot Robertson, chief executive officer at the Robertson Group, said: “The completion of the initial demolition phase is an important milestone clearing the way for archaeological investigations that will help us understand and respect the history of the site before construction begins."

The designs have been prepared by Oberlanders and LUC landscape architects.
