Edinburgh townhouses return to residential use

A pair of A-listed Georgian townhouses in Edinburgh's western New Town are to be returned to residential use following a period of commercial operation.
Morgan Architects and Drum Capital Projects propose to subdivide 46 Melville Street into three apartments while reinstating number 48 as a single townhouse, joined by a new mews annexe to its rear.
Proposed alterations include the replacement of single glazed sash windows with slimline double glazed sashes and the installation of bike stands in the basement, together with stonework repairs.
In a design statement, the architects wrote: "There is a clear and growing demand for high-quality residential developments in the city centre area. This is supported by the relevant policy designations and reflects the original residential character of the existing building.
"We are mindful of the sensitivities associated with the Category A listed building at No. 46 & 48 Melville Street, as well as the New Town Conservation Area and World Heritage Status, all of which must be carefully considered in detail as part of the planning application process."
At William Street North West Lane, a car park will be replaced by a garage with living accommodation above, linked to the parent property by a footpath.
