Go-ahead granted for a giant Hunterston fish farm

North Ayrshire Council's planning committee has awarded planning consent for a large-scale salmon-rearing facility at Hunterston.

Bakkafrost, the largest fish-farming business on the Faroe Islands, has identified a 6.75ha site at the north eastern corner of Hunterston Construction Yard for the project.

Denham Youd has designed a land-based industrial facility housing a Nofitech recirculating aquaculture system for breeding larger juvenile salmon in a controlled environment without the risk of disease or parasites from the marine environment.

Incorporating an administration and education centre for the business the development occupies a promontory of reclaimed land on the Firth of Clyde opposite the Isle of Cumbrae and comprises four interconnected tanks to nurture salmon from hatching to maturity.

Councillor Robert Foster, chair of the planning committee, commented: “These are exciting plans and following consideration we were pleased to approve the proposals. We look forward to things progressing in the coming months.”

The public entrance will be finished in a perforated mesh on rainscreen with elements of curtain walling and fibre cement cladding.

A bio-controlled public interpretation centre and viewing deck will be provided

A few trees would go down well.

Industrial farming -- growing vegetables in multi storey car parks must be next.
