Aberdeen's spiritual centre to be turned into a community hub
April 24 2025
Aberdeen's spiritual heart is to be strengthened with the transformation of a historic kirk into a community hub while preserving its key characteristics and atmosphere.
Scot Art, specialists in repurposing underutilised spaces, has won listed building consent from Aberdeen City Council to fully renovate the Kirk of St Nicholas into a £1.5m cultural hub.
Conservation specialists at Mill Architects will lead the renovation, which includes updating the West Kirk, Drum Aisle and Tower with a series of measures to introduce adaptable features to the historic fabric.
Led by director Jo Parry-Geddes this work will be conducted in collaboration with the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment at Robert Gordon University.
Jo Parry-Geddes commented: “Securing listed building consent marks the start of a careful and considered restoration. Our design will respect the Kirk’s historic character while ensuring it is a functional and welcoming space for the future. The project is not only about conservation, but about creating meaningful new opportunities for the community to connect with this extraordinary site.”
Key features such as an Italianate-style West Church and a stained glass window commemorating the North Sea oil industry will be preserved as part of this work. Upon completion, the revitalised kirk will host art exhibitions, performances, educational workshops and community events.
