Portobello mews trio to court families

Updated plans to redevelop a rundown commercial property as three mews homes in Portobello, Edinburgh, have been filed by James Robertson Architect to address concerns relating to the initial application.

McKenzie Residential and Sundial Properties propose to introduce modern family housing to the conservation area by emphasising security, low maintenance and community.

In their design statement, the applicant wrote: "The proposed design for the withdrawn application for the site had a contemporary, flat roofed form finished in blond brick. During discussion of the previous application, the planning authority expressed a preference for the development to take the form of a traditional mews."

To address this the 700sq/m backlands site south of the High Street drops the flat-roofed solution previously proposed in favour of a more traditional 'mews' styling, reducing its massing and footprint in the process. Newly introduced timber cladding to the rear of two homes further reduces presence.

Subject to approvals it is hoped to clear the site later this year and erect the new property by the end of 2026.
