Walled garden and indoor pool to evoke a lost Borders mansion
February 4 2025
The site of a lost Borders mansion, replaced by a modern equivalent in 2011, is set to make a splash with the submission of plans for an indoor 18m pool and leisure facility.
Zone Architects have been commissioned to build an ancillary extension to the existing home at Chirnside in the Scottish Borders, utilising natural rubble sandstone and incorporating a walled garden to sit comfortably in the estate grounds.
Outlining their proposals Zone wrote: "This proposal will extend New Whitehall House with a well proportioned single storey, pitched-roof outbuilding. The proposed pool, sauna, and walled garden will be used only by the residents of the house and their family.
"The form of the building is traditional in style and has been conceived of as an ancillary wing, like a stable or garage block attached to a larger house. It will be single storey making it subservient to the principal house and it will be finished externally with high quality materials, including natural stone, zinc and timber."
New Whitehall House stands adjacent to the site of the original Whitehall House, a B-listed Georgian pile demolished in 2015 after racking up a £1m repair bill.

The little new building looks quite nice but totally incongruous with its stated use and the fake manor house adjacent.
