Bracklinn Falls claims world's best pedestrian & cycle bridge title
November 20 2024
A perforated steel footbridge designed to reinstate access to the Bracklinn Falls in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park has been named best pedestrian and cycle bridge by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering.
Completed in February 2023 the replacement footbridge near Calendar enables walkers to complete a circuit of the picturesque waterfall after the previous timber crossing was removed over structural concerns.
Cake Engineering director David Knight said: “This is a significant accolade for the bridge, which was up against extremely tough competition from as far afield as Japan, China, Switzerland and Ireland. It was a real honour to accept the award on behalf of everyone who had an involvement in the design and construction – from the design team through to the fabricators and team who installed the bridge in the dead of winter."
Designed by Cake Engineering and Beam Architects the new bridge has been built as part of the National Park's Place programme to enhance its natural and cultural heritage.
The Bracklinn Falls Bridge was a Gold Award winner at the Scottish Design Awards 2023 in the Low-Cost Project Schemes Under 200k category.
