Former Strathclyde student union set to be reborn as a digital hub

The University of Strathclyde has revealed plans to transform its derelict former student union building on John Street into a digital, business and social hub.
The Charles Huang Advanced Technology & Innovation Centre (CHATIC) has been made possible by a £30m donation by Dr Charles Huang, founder of private equity firm Pasaca Capital, to radically reimagine the space.
CHATIC will offer space for businesses to co-locate on campus as well as a range of facilities for health and technological research in addition to a social innovation hub.
Professor Sir Jim McDonald, principal & vice-chancellor of Strathclyde, said: “I am delighted that CHATIC will facilitate new opportunities to: partner and innovate with industry; enhance research capabilities by actively developing our research leaders of the future; grow entrepreneurial and social innovation opportunities open to staff, students and the wider community; and, it will create opportunities for our students to engage with industry research partners."
Due for completion in 2026 the refurbishment by HLM will bring all 10 floors of the 1959 building up to date, employing an estimated 67% less carbon than a comparable new build.
