Five shortlisted for Helmsdale cultural centre
November 8 2024
The RIAS Consultancy has shortlisted five practices for the redevelopment of a Highland cultural centre.
Timespan in the village of Helmsdale, Sutherland, is seeking a design team to regenerate their current museum and cultural centre, turning to the RIAS to help organise that process.
An open call in September resulted in 38 expressions of interest being received, from which five will now undertake a six-month feasibility study. These are Assemble and Office Corr Higgins; Dualchas; Konishi Gaffney Architects with David Lemm and Allt Environmental; Moxon and Rural Design.
Giulia Gregnanin, director/curator of Timespan, commented: "This project marks a pivotal step in Timespan’s ambition to become an Institution of the Commons, and we look forward to seeing our civic and cultural vision woven into the fabric of our building. We’re thrilled to welcome the five shortlisted teams to Helmsdale."
The project brief calls for the former herring curing yard to be developed as a café, gallery, workshops, storage, and museum space with emphasis on local materials and sustainability.
Each shortlisted practice has till the end of December to submit a tender with the successful team receiving £30k for preparing their feasibility study.

There is talk of all 5 now undertaking a 6 month feasibility study.
However there is further comment about the shortlisted practices having until December to submit a tender !?!
Successful team -- as in one not 5 -- getting £30K to prep their feasibility study.
So is it 5 feasibility studies or just the one?
Is it £150K in middle class welfare or just £30K?
Interesting project but not at the big number before a shovel is in the ground.
