Brownfield Blackford build to deliver homes for social rent

Work has begun to deliver 12 energy-efficient apartments in Blackford, Edinburgh, the first new affordable homes for social rent to be built in the area for 60 years.

CALA Homes East are introducing a range of 49 flats and townhouses on the site of the former St Crispin's School after overcoming multiple neighbour objections on the grounds of limited parking and four storey massing. The scheme was initially refused consent by planners only to be overturned by the Scottish Government on appeal.

Ian Murray, MP for Edinburgh South commented: “City of Edinburgh Council were right to declare a housing emergency in November. 5,000 households in Edinburgh face homelessness each night with our housing market being put under immense pressure from the cost-of-living crisis and the fallout of the pandemic.

“It’s very welcome that this site will contain affordable units to help with this housing emergency and I hope the success of the St Crispin’s site will encourage developers to work with the council and social landlord partners to deliver the affordable housing urgently needed to help young people and families across our city.”

Designed by ISA the homes will be handed over to the Wheatley Group upon completion in autumn 2025.
