Demographic decline drives Coatbridge community consolidation

Ryder Architecture has brought forward plans for a new community hub and primary school to replace the existing St Stephen's Primary, Coatbridge.

Located on the site of the existing school the new build replacement will combine a 367-pupil primary with a police station, early years centre and additional support classes to address the town's shifting demography.

Detailing the need for change Ryder wrote: "With a declining 0-15 years population and rapidly increasing ageing population, flexibility within the school estate and community projects has never been more prevalent and this project will help create spaces for the community."

The complex accommodation schedule will see segregated public, shared and teaching areas arranged around a shared entrance.

Positioned centrally within the site the school will front a public plaza facing Sikeside Street with secure outdoor spaces located to the south.

I was down looking at the plans very disappointing that there is no football pitch. I think that would have added a lot more to the community
