Shandon brewery site goes flat out to meet a housing shortfall

Artisan Real Estate has shared developing designs for a new residential development at the former Caledonian Brewery site on Slateford Road, Edinburgh.

A design team led by Sheppard Robson with Simpson & Brown, Atelier Ten and RankinFraser has been assembled for the 1.9-acre triangular site in Shandon.

The B-listed industrial complex was, until 2022, the last large-scale brewer in the city. Surviving heritage will be retained with new construction rising alongside the characterful Maltings Building.

In a concept statement, Artisan wrote: "Our vision for the site embraces its history, advocating for the retention of the earliest brewery buildings to transform the site into a significant and livable urban area. Through the replacement of the currently abandoned structures with residential development, our proposal aims to cultivate a diverse and engaging environment, enriching the area’s character."

Draft proposals call for the removal of later additions, opening up views of industrial elements while making space for newly built apartment blocks set around green space and access routes.

No pressure, but I really hope they do this site justice.. There are some lovely and interesting existing buildings to work with there, but key will be the new buildings and how they tie in. Not square "could-be-anywhere" boxes please!
