Wedge apartments to complete the street in Meadowbank

Construction is expected to get underway this summer on a modest apartment building in Edinburgh's Meadowbank district.

Echoing a recent student build nearby the scheme capitalises on an awkward parcel of under-utilised land close to the city centre to provide nine car-free apartments.

Currently home to a substation, to be relocated, the building will complete the northern end of Meadowbank Terrace by obscuring a gable wall with a tenement-scale infill.

Adopting vertical features to evoke chimney stacks and a recessed zinc penthouse floor to celebrate the corner the design sees ground floor flats benefit from private external amenities while upper floor homes each have access to a balcony.

Finished in sandstone and zinc and built to passivhaus standards the homes have been designed by ATW Architects on behalf of City Builds, with planning consent having been obtained in December.

Contrived nonsense of a scheme. Wee wedge shaped site could have been an opportunity for little marker on the edge of the park.
Instead we have this with its blank end gable (and twin RWP feature), tiny windows and north facing balc's.
