Funding secured for twin Edinburgh student projects

A York-based property developer is doubling down on Edinburgh student housing after securing private equity funding for two new build schemes.

S. Harrison has secured forward funding from Singapore-based Q Investment Partners to deliver 141 studio rooms across twin developments at East Newington Place, off Newington Road and the Canongate.

In Newington, a disused commercial unit will be demolished and replaced by a four-storey block overseen by Comprehensive Design Architects. Comprising 65 studio rooms with supporting study rooms, multimedia rooms, gyms, break-out space, cycle storage and open courtyards.

A similar approach in the Canongate will see the delicate removal of existing buildings to create room for 76 studio rooms and supporting amenities, to designs by 3DReid Architects.

David Clancy, from S Harrison, said: “Construction work at East Newington Place will start in the coming months, with the scheme complete and ready for the 2025 student intake. We also expect demolition work to begin imminently at Canongate, with the development ready to open for the start of the 2026 academic year.”

With planning permission already in place for both projects work is expected to get underway in a matter of months.

This is bad news so far as I'm concerned. I live opposite the East Newington development and think the new building is too big for the site, very out of sympathy with the surroundings.

This area Edinburgh Southside has always carried a high load of student accommodation and Yahoo News reports that since 2010 over 2500 student flats have been permitted and only 703 ordinary homes.

This development was unanimously opposed by local residents and Edinburgh Council but the decision was overturned by the Scottish Government - for no compelling reason.
