Floating high-end home to address Gogar Castle

A bespoke high-end home is set to break ground this spring on the outskirts of Edinburgh once Block Nine Architects complete the technical design.

Approved in October the £1.25m home will rise on a greenfield site close to Edinburgh Airport on land surrounding the A-listed Gogar Castle, the scene of several residential developments in recent years. The contemporary design is oriented to capitalise on southerly aspects while maintaining privacy from adjacent apartment blocks.

Open plan living spaces sit on an east-to-west axis with accommodation extending through north and south wings which frame private courtyards.

In a press statement Block Nine wrote: "In recognition of the architectural style established within the area, the proposals are clean, crisp and cutting edge in their form, with simple intersecting linear volumes dictated by existing site geometries. The intention is to provide a bold yet sympathetic dwelling which sits comfortably within its context, whilst the internal layout is flexible, and can be easily adapted in the future to meet the changing requirements of the occupants.

"A feature stone wall dissects the proposal at ground floor level creating a cohesive aesthetic and tying the building into its natural semi-rural context, while white render is used on the 1st floor volume in harmony with the materiality of both the existing Castle Gogar, and the neighbouring contemporary dwellings within the site."

Elements of feature zinc cladding are used to break up the 'floating' glass and rendered first-floor facades, a lightweight contrast to the heavy stonework below. An emphasis on sustainability and biodiversity will see existing mature trees retained through the work as well as the adoption of technologies such as ground source heat pumps, a rooftop solar PV array and integrated battery and thermal storage.

The consultant team includes Calum Bennett Engineering, JLL and Xburo.
