Midlothian snowsports destination poised for a terracotta makeover

Moves to redevelop the Midlothian Snowsport Centre in the Pentland Hills overlooking Edinburgh have taken a significant step forward with the award of planning consent for a new visitor hub.

Destination Hillend will anchor existing ski slopes with a new outdoor sports hub set into the topography of Caerketton Hill. Accessible from a raised ground floor the linear addition follows the ups and downs of the landscape with an undulating roof. Clad in red terracotta tiles above a buff brick base, a nod to the materiality of traditional agricultural buildings in the Lothians, the visitor attraction will act as a centralised hub hosting climbing, soft play, ski-hire, dining, events and retail.

Conceived in three dimensions particular emphasis has been placed on the topographical roof, referred to as a 'fifth elevation' which gains particular prominence from the elevated views of skiers, as well as those enjoying a zipline, alpine coaster and tubing track. Strategically positioned dips and protrusions in the expansive sedum-covered roof which mimics the surrounding landscape.

Outlining this landscape-led approach Smith Scott Mullan Associates wrote: "The overall roof is read as a clear series of triangular shapes. This clarity in shape results in a strong geometric roof pattern which is distinguishable from the surrounding hills, whilst also sensitively respecting its natural context.

"The form, mass, and profile of the building are each designed to harmonize with the natural terrain and preserve the existing character and profile of the slope. The building masses have been oriented to closely align with the existing contours of the slope. In doing so, the amount of cut and fill on the hillside is greatly reduced.

"The green roof, along with the thoughtful alignment of the form on the existing gradients of the hill, will help to reinforce the idea that the building is firmly rooted to its landscape. The ambition, in this context, is to give the building a sense of permanence."

Work on the detailed technical design is now underway with Midlothian Council pledging to move on-site in the 'near future'.
