Aberdeen institute gets the lie of the land for a new conference hall
November 14 2023
The James Hutton Institute, the scientific research body focussed on land use, has filed plans for a new conference hall and infill extension at its Craigiebuckler home.
The Just Transition Hub by jmarchitects will provide a dedicated conference, training and exhibition hall within the institute's extensive landscaped grounds. Conceived to help tie together several ad hoc buildings the new space will sit before two new terraces which serve as outdoor breakout and dining areas.
In keeping with the environmental ethos of the institute a sedum lawn will be laid over the roof and a central courtyard will be relandscaped to provide a more picturesque setting for a new cafe.
Outlining the design approach the architects observed: "The parapet line of the new build is respectful of the existing western wing’s curved roof. The footprint of the new building fits within the existing grading, ensuring that no additional cut and fill exercises would be required. The singular form of the extension was split into two masses, further defining through height differences and materiality choices the use of the interior spaces."
Clad in stone and metal effect rainscreen the extension is linked to the main building by private and public circular paths accessible from multiple points.
