Glasgow Academy pitches £12m Anniesland Sporting Campus

The Glasgow Academy has revealed plans to establish a £12m sports campus in Anniesland as part of its 2030 estates review.

Anniesland Sporting Campus will draw together three existing west end playing fields to improve facilities for pupils and the broader community.

Drawing together Sheppard Robson, Porter Planning, Rankin Fraser, Goodson Associates, Atelier Ten the Project Anniesland masterplan will overhaul outdated existing facilities, particularly for female pupils, with additional teaching space, improved access and storage.

Preferred works include the creation of three new tennis courts, hockey and rugby pitches at Upper Windyedge and an adjacent school ground. Other projects include the refurbishment of an ageing clubhouse and the building of additional classrooms. A third site at New Anniesland will be upgraded to support athletics and cricket.

In a statement, the school wrote: "The Glasgow Academy aims to create an exemplary sporting development that will incorporate sustainable design principles into the development process, such as energy-efficient technologies and green infrastructure, supporting Glasgow’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral city.

"There will be careful thought for planting and landscaping throughout, with greenery and landscape features creating a place which supports improved access to sport whilst simultaneously improving biodiversity and wildlife in the local area."

To help pay for this a parcel of land at Lower Windyedge will be sold off for housing. A start on-site is expected to be made by summer 2025.

Tough times at Hogwarts High?

Selling off 40% of the estate to bring the rest up to a reasonable standard -- bit of a major reconfiguration of the facilities.

What next -- tap up a local farmer and sell the rest?

Disappointed to not see community allotments included with this proposal. I had earmarked 4 plots to sub-let, so gutted they never materialised in the end.
