A historic school is to play its part in the ongoing regeneration of Townhead with plans for its residential conversion.

Wellwood Leslie Architects has been enlisted to revitalise the C-listed Allan Glen's secondary annexe, securing its long-term future through re-use.

Designed by Burnet, Boston and Carruthers in 1906 the classically influenced school will be retained and restored, retaining original floors and walls where possible. Key interventions include extending the atrium to the upper ground floor to draw natural light to the entrance. Into this space, a new glazed lift will be installed with planting, seating and water features establishing it as a key amenity space.

Outlining their vision for the atrium the architects said: "... given the large volume of the atrium, it is not envisaged that the space will be heated. Instead, it will be an intermediate buffer space between the outside and the inside of the apartments. This approach avoids the potentially significant heat losses through the extensive glazed roof and will allow the retention of the exposed timber sarking at roof level."

Classrooms will be subdivided into flats with generous ceiling heights permitting mezzanine floors to be installed and recessed to avoid interrupting window profiles. A south-facing 'sunken garden' will also be established by removing a retaining wall.

Disgraceful that the building has been allowed to fall into such a state of decay.

Looked like an orphan asset given the spend afforded to other projects around it.

Good that it is to be saved, let's hope all proceeds well and in the not to distant future
