Bronze Age stone carvings inspire Faifley Passivhaus campus

A school consolidation drive in West Dunbartonshire will deliver a Passivhaus standard community campus in Faifley.

Two primary schools, a nursery, additional support needs provision and a library are all planned in compliance with the Scottish Government's net zero standards for public buildings.

Delivered through Hub West Scotland the energy-efficient campus will replace St Josephs and Edinbarnet primary schools, Auchnacraig and Lennox early learning and childcare centres and the Skypoint community centre to improve facilities and introduce economies of scale.

Emphasising flexibility the design employs a dining hall which doubles as a drama studio while sports facilities will be made available for public use out of hours. Community allotments, a woodland area and gardens are also planned.

Ruaridh Nicol, associate at Holmes Miller, said: "We’ve designed the new Campus as a sustainable and inclusive facility that will provide the people of Faifley not only with a high-quality educational building, but also indoor and outdoor sport and leisure facilities for all ages, that will enhance lives."

The school's design is inspired by the nearby Cochno Stone, a large rock hosting cup and ring Bronze Age carvings, a pattern replicated throughout the building.
