Witchburn kicks off a new wave of Campbeltown distilleries

Argyll & Bute Council has awarded planning consent for the first of several new distilleries planned for Campbeltown.

Witchburn will be the town's fourth distillery and promises to usher in a new whisky age for the region to better compete with the Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Islay regions.

Bari Reid, director of Organic Architects, said: “The distillery will be located at the disused RAF airbase in Machrihanish and will be powered by 100% green renewable energy sources and the latest in heat and energy recovery systems, making Witchburn one of the most environmentally friendly distilleries in Scotland.

“Distilling is the perfect opportunity for the adaptive reuse of a building like this which has struggled to find a purpose, bringing highly skilled jobs into a fragile rural economy.”

Production at the new distillery is set to commence at the end of 2024.

A bubble in your whisky anyone? All we need now is bob the builder to come and build it judging by the aesthetic. Nice to see some relatively sustainable rural investment anyway.
