Crematorium and timber kit factory form an unlikely Glenrothes pairing
August 2 2023
A Glenrothes crematorium will pair up with a timber kit factory, mediated by a memorial landscape, amidst woodland in south Glenrothes.
Dignity Funerals has enlisted Do Architecture for the planning application, emphasising carbon neutrality throughout with the symbiotic sharing of renewable energy.
In a press statement, the architects wrote: "The pairing of typologies has evolved through an aspiration for carbon neutrality across both buildings and throughout the site. While crematoria and industrial buildings are generally regarded as carbon emitters, the opportunity arises here to mutually share formerly rejected and renewable energies in the interests of reducing the development!s impact on the environment and aligning with ongoing Net-Zero aspirations for the site."
Drawing inspiration from an established desire path through grassland as exists currently, the masterplan sees the public frontage of both buildings stand as a 'line in the land', separating public and private spaces along a tree-lined arrival route for funeral corteges.
Set within a designed landscape of memorial trees, water features and paths by Rankin Fraser the new crematorium is designed to form a serene backdrop to the passage between life and death.
The building line transitions from a mark in the ground, through hedge, screen and eventually a perforated wall
