Developer to nurse a former Edinburgh hospital back to health

A three-year construction project to transform the former Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Marchmont, Edinburgh, into 85 apartments and eight townhouses has begun.

Square & Crescent with Fletcher Joseph Architects will build the homes in and around the B-listed building, which sits on a prime four-acre site opposite the Meadows, between Sciennes Road and Rillbank Crescent.

Euan Marshall, Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director at Square & Crescent said: “Most Edinburgh parents, at one time or another, have had to take a trip to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children so we are proud to have an opportunity to respect its history by carefully restoring the recognised building.

“We’re certain that with Royal Meadows, we are going to do this famous building justice by giving it a brand new purpose and offering up a wonderful place to live.”

Royal Meadows is scheduled to complete by the end of 2025.

A beautiful building, nice to see it re-used.

I purposefully haven't looked to see if there is a godawful box stuck on the back somewhere (to squeeze the last juice out of the site as so often happens) - hopefully not!
