Prestwick satellite hub to underpin a new era of cloud services

Prestwick International Aerospace Park has been chosen to host a Norr designed satellite manufacturing facility by Mangata Networks, specialists in the burgeoning field of cloud services.

The engineering, manufacturing and operations hub will underpin the manufacture of satellites as part of a growth plan that will expand a fleet of 32 satellites to over 750 to improve connectivity.

With the capacity to test over 24 satellites every three months, the facility will be capable of producing orbital platforms of up to 1,500kg with an on-site operations centre managing the deployment and management of the global network.

Larry Schwartz, chief operating officer at Mangata Networks, said: “Our Prestwick facility will include a satellite operations centre to operate our satellites following their launch. Our facility will also feature a network operations centre to operate our end-to-end global communications network as well as an R&D centre to develop our intelligent microEdge data centres. Having all of these operations under one roof makes us extremely efficient across all aspects of our technology development and operational networks."

Construction will get underway early next year ahead of the anticipated launch of the first satellites from Prestwick Spaceport in spring 2024. Magenta's space hub is expected to open later that year.

Loving the DeLorean angle.

The political paperwork will be filed next to the ferry farrago so that it can't be found.

This is a great and much needed development for this part of Ayrshire with the long underused Prestwick Airport, as a key component in international transport and with a good railway link to Glasgow and the centre of Ayr. SAC and Network Rail, who between them seem to be determined to demolish part of Ayr Station Hotel that could be turned into a support facility for this new development, local professional services, utilising the building and the quick link to Prestwick. Forward thinking is essential, rather than demolition a historic building with embodied carbon.

Great looking building. Industrial / fab plants don't have to just be sheds.
