Vertical gardens to define Greenock infill homes

Plans for 30 homes for private sale on the steeply sloping site of the former Greenock Academy have been drawn up by Mast Architects on behalf of CCG.

The 1.47-hectare brownfield site at Madeira Street has been earmarked for a mix of townhouses and terraced houses arranged as a sequence of stepped terraces across the steep gradient. This will necessitate the use of retaining walls up to 3.5m in height with the applicant minimising their visual impact by the creation of 'vertical gardens' of planted crib walls.

In a design statement Mast wrote: "Through dialogue with planning, the back gardens slope at 1:20 and then step halfway through to reduce the impact of the retention that cannot be avoided.

"The stepped levels of the retaining walls and gardens provide a tiered approach to the development site which is in keeping with the surrounding urban fabric of Greenock."

The homes follow the earlier delivery of an Early Learning Centre at the top of the site, adjacent to Finnart Street.
