R&A win approval for St Andrews golf testing facility
An application to build a golf equipment testing centre by the R&A at Kingsbarns Golf Links, St Andrews, has been approved by Fife Council.

Designed by Wellwood Lesley Architects the new facility has been conceived to minimise visual impact and will incorporate space for testing and research, storage and administration for the golf body’s equipment standards department.

Finished in hardwood cladding under a sedum planted roof the facility will be located to the north of an existing practice area, carefully positioned to lie outwith ball travel distances.

In their design statement the architects noted: “Overall the building is conceived to support the specialist research undertaken within it whilst visually blending with its natural setting. The building is intended to be visually discreet. The building is designed as a significant part of the infrastructure of golf within its natural home of St Andrews.”

The new facility will undertake research into both balls and clubs with two custom-built golf robots used to accurately track and measure swing and motion.

It follows separate plans for another golf storage facility designed by Archial Norr for St Andrews Links Trust.
