Funding pledged for St Martin’s Church mountain bike centre
A B-listed Gillespie Kidd and Coia designed church in Castlemilk, Glasgow, has received a £500k grant from Historic Scotland in support of a bid to transform the venue into a mountain biking and activity centre.

St Martin’s Church is situated adjacent to the Cathkin Braes mountain bike track, a key venue for the 2014 event, stimulating desire to create a lasting local legacy of the summer jamboree.

Led by the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust the money will fund building repair work to the 1961 property, using traditional materials and specialist craftsmen although work on the conservation, repair and remodeling of the church is dependent on the allocation of additional grants, which will be announced over the coming weeks.

Fiona Hyslop, cabinet secretary for culture and external affairs, said: “Historic buildings offer great opportunities for education as well as providing important landmarks in our towns and cities which are key to our identity, community and memories.

“St Martin’s Church in Glasgow will contribute to the lasting legacy for the city from the Commonwealth Games and bring numerous benefits to the community.”
