Gareth Hoskins Architects have seen off an array of top international architects to be announced as the unanimous winner of a competition to design a new single campus for Bird College, Kent.

The performance arts college is seeking to redevelop and rationalise its existing estate through unification of five existing premises in Sidcup to a single site on Alma Road, home to the Bexley Adult Education College.

This will serve to improve facilities and accommodate a burgeoning student roll through provision of new teaching resources.

Commenting on the winning scheme jury member Greg Penoyre, senior partner at Penoyre & Prasad, said the proposals ‘demonstrated skilful responses to a broad range of issues and a strong empathy with the College.’

Hoskins himself added: “Our initial ideas focus around creating an engaging and inspiring educational venue that supports the College’s ambitions of continuing to develop their local connections, whilst also allowing them to expand their national and international profile within the performing arts.”

Defeated finalists in the competition were Carmody Groarke; Friend & Company Architects with Harry Gugger Studio; Mecanoo Architecten; Eric Parry Architects and Sarah Wigglesworth Architects.
