BBC publishes 1986 Domesday survey
An ambitious gathering of information of ordinary day to day life in Britain in 1986 has been published online after languishing on defunct laser discs for 25 years.

The treasure trove of photos, videos and personal accounts document the mundane happenings of day to day life, including accounts of housing, trade, transport and education.

Falling shortly after the vast urban renewal projects of the post war period the cityscapes are surprisingly consistent with today but for the antiquated fashions, vehicles and advertisements of the day.

In an article on Glasgow housing one respondent noted: “Many buildings have recently been sandblasted. Years of grime and soot give way to reveal the natural stone.”

Another contributor lauds the “newly” opened motorway and modernised subway system.

The time capsule was originally compiled by schools and community groups on the back of a concerted BBC drive to replicate the scope of the original domesday book published 900 years earlier.
