Maybole High Street reimagined as active travel corridor

South Ayrshire Council is hosting a public consultation setting out its intended delivery of a £1.9m active travel corridor through the heart of Maybole.

Led by Sustrans and LUC the public realm initiative will see the towns High Street transformed with a new market square, broadened pavements and new seating following the diversion of vehicles to a new bypass.

Designed to encourage walking and cycling the pedestrian-friendly environment will also entail investment in historic buildings with only one-way traffic permitted between John Knox Street and St Cuthberts Road.

Councillor Chris Cullen commented: "The proposals for Maybole will completely change the visitor experience, increasing accessibility and enhancing community connectivity for all, via the active travel network, making it a destination of choice."

Chiquita Elvin, head of infrastructure delivery for Sustrans Scotland, said: "These draft proposals seek to address the challenges posed by Maybole's historic town centre and demonstrate how partnerships make better places to walk, cycle, live, visit and work and how this can be done while respecting the historic character and heritage of a place."

Opinions should be registered by Friday at 17:00.

It is estimated that traffic levels on the High Street can be reduced by 75%

Follow the lead of French towns and put slim bollards down the entire length of the pavement otherwise, it's not really worth bothering with schemes like this. You can imagine it now, all that lovely new paving cracked in a few months by people parking on it, not to mention the inconvenience and danger to pedestrians.

This may be a silly question but with Maybole high street being on a major truck road between the Cairnryan ferry ports and Central Scotland, will there be a bypass?
