Ball in Edinburgh planners court for Trinity Academy’s new PE department

The City of Edinburgh Council is leading efforts to build a new sports facility on the site of the current Bangholm Outdoor Centre at Craighall Road, on behalf of Trinity Academy.

Architects Holmes Miller have been drafted in to oversee the design of the Bangholm Sports & Outdoor Centre which will serve principally as a new physical education department for the school, opening up for community use out of hours.

Maintaining current access and zoning arrangements the new centre will occupy the footprint of existing buildings and is conceived as a simple square plan the facility is arranged around a central fitness suite. Associated sports halls and classrooms are then arranged in a ‘ring’ around this point with recessed elements offering shelter and signalling points of entry.

Explaining their massing approach the architects wrote: “The massing of the building was considered when forming the plan with a desire to maintain the single-storey accommodation to the south with the larger double volume halls to the north. This had two reasons behind it, firstly from an internal planning perspective, it is appropriate to keep the changing accommodation (which is single-storey) to the south to be close to both pitches.

“This arrangement means that the proposed building will not obstruct daylighting or south facing views from the neighbouring four-storey apartment blocks.”

A standalone outdoor building will serve as a workshop and equipment store.

Local hockey and rugby clubs will also be based at the facility

The sports facility they are proposing to replace is around 10 years old... not a great lifespan for a building.
