Moves to revitalise Aberdeen’s Union Street continue with new plans to convert under-utilised upper floors of retail premises to residential use.
Graeme Cheyne Properties and Cumming and Co have identified a C-listed property at 156 Union Street as being suitable for seven city centre flats via conversion of vacant storage and office space to provide a mix of two and three-bed apartments with the fourth-floor flat benefitting from a private balcony.
Existing concrete floors and stairwell will be retained as part of these works with upvc windows replaced with modern timber sash and case units. A slate roof and cupola will also be retained save for the introduction of dormer windows with a rear elevation to Diamond Lane also given a sympathetic treatment.
An accompanying design statement read: “The Diamond Lane elevation will have the later side infill extension removed and replaced with an ashlar wall tied-in to the existing granite wall. The original second floor windows will be unblocked and put back into their original use. The mansard roof next door will be replicated with a natural slate finish on top.”
Aberdeen City Council has designated Union Street as a Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), a five-year initiative to return rundown buildings back to productive use by providing funding for the sensitive repair of heritage features.
