Plans drawn up by Keppie Design, Simpson & Brown and Aecom call for the introduction of a new fully accessible entrance along with the insertion of an external passenger lift and a rear link bridge.
Consisting of a 1906 wing designed by James Miller and a later 1957 extension by Basil Spence the project will entail creation of new ground level access as the main entry point through the former element. Faced in anodised aluminium with Caithness stone it will connect via a pend to a rear courtyard lift, also clad in aluminium.
A lightweight connecting bridge to the rear will round off the list of major external alterations, providing high-level lecture theatre access.
Internally work will include the installation of new fire doors and the installation of accessible toilets.
