St Andrew Square Malmaison hotel breaks ground
3DReid have broken ground on a new Malmaison hotel on Edinburgh’s prominent St Andrew Square through conversion of the A-listed Buchan House into 72 guestrooms together with a restaurant, bar, café and private dining.

Delivered in partnership with Malmaison Hotel du Vin Group and S Harrison Developments the tactful intervention will fashion a series of public spaces at ground level together with twin new build additions within a rear courtyard to jointly provide additional front of house space and connections.

Originally built in 1775 as five houses and latterly used as office space the current property suffers from a disjointed layout, disrupting through movement and prompting a complete rethink of the internal structure through removal of a non-original rear wall and enlarging a reception space.

A 1970s elevation to the rear will also be re-clad, improving the setting of Findlay Court with new facades com posed of anodised aluminium cladding, glazing and base stonework.

Doug Pearson, associate director at 3DReid said: "The new extensions were essential for the commercial viability of the scheme. However, new and old have been clearly delineated as it was of particular importance that the external additions were sensitive to, but visually and materially distinct from, the A-Listed Buchan House."

The first guests are expected to be welcomed by the end of 2019.
